Montessori school plans open house

Families of current and prospective students between the ages of 6 weeks and 6 years old are invited to attend an open house from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. May 14 at the Hawaii Montessori Schools – Kamuela Campus, 64-1058 Mamalahoa Highway, Waimea. Visitors will have an opportunity to visit classrooms, learn about the school and its programs, financial aid opportunities and meet staff members.

Hawaii Montessori Schools has been part of the West Hawaii community since 1980. The school provides quality education for children ages 6 weeks through 6 years of age using the principles and methods of Maria Montessori.

Dorrance Scholarships awarded to 10

Ten incoming University of Hawaii at Hilo freshmen from Hawaii Island have been named as 2015 recipients of the Dorrance Scholarship.

The recipients are: Sharlene Bala, Honokaa High and Intermediate; Maggie Chen and Marc Daniel Grande, both students at Kealakehe High; Adrianna Zablan, Kanu O Ka Aina New Century Public Charter; Courtney Ip, Waiakea High; Maya Kottwitz, Hawaii Academy of Arts and Science; Marina Merkulova, Laupaoehoe Community Public Charter; Shaniah Yogi, Kamehameha High Schools Hawaii; Brandon Aguiar, Waiakea High; and Everette Ganir, Keaau High.

The Dorrance Scholarship is an innovative, four-year award designed to benefit students who are the first in their family to attend college. Each year, up to 10 eligible students are awarded need-based scholarships of $10,000 per year to attend the UH-Hilo.

In addition to the direct financial assistance, the students will take part in a custom-designed summer bridge program to help them transition from high school to college.

College fair draws more than 300

The fifth annual Hawaii Association for College Admission Counseling Waimea Spring College Fair was hosted by Parker School on April 14. This year, because of its growing size, the fair was held at the Waimea Town Hall and the lobby of Kahilu Theatre.

Representatives from more than 55 colleges and universities traveled to Waimea to meet college-bound Big Island students. More than 300 students and families from Kona, Kohala, Honokaa and Waimea attended the event which included breakout sessions about preparing for college, college selection and application, paying for college and a session on “Why Art School?”

Konawaena Middle plans showcase

Konawaena Middle School will hold its KMS Showcase Spectacular event from 5 to 8 p.m. May 22 in the school cafeteria. Student work will be showcased, a student talent show will be held and a pizza dinner will be served.
